A military station
A military station, One of many erected along the canals and roads of China. There are five cones in front of the station, which contained combustibles to be fired in an emergency, such as invasion or insurrection. In the look out tower, the sentinel bangs a gong. Soldiers stand to attention as a vessel passes by containing men of distinction. They are saluted by the firing of three petards. Image taken from The Costume of China. Illustrated in forty-eight coloured engravings. Originally published/produced in William Miller: London, 1805.
