The Roman Forum of Mertola, Portugal, 2009. Artist: Samuel Magal
The Roman Forum of Mertola, Portugal, 2009. The tower of Mertola Church can be seen in the background. The village of Mertola is picturesquely set on the slopes above the left bank of the Guadiana. In Roman times the site was occupied by the town of Mirtilis, mentioned by the Alexandrian geographer Ptolemy, which later had to give way to a Moorish stronghold.
