'Portrait of the King Louis XVI', 1770s. Louis (1754-1793) succeeded his father Louis XV as king in 1774 and was crowned on 11 June 1775. After the monarchy was overthrown by the French Revolution in 1789, Louis, his queen, Marie Antoinette, and their children were imprisoned in the Tuileries Palace in Paris. In 1791 they tried, unsuccessfully to escape from France. Louis was tried and convicted of treason and was executed by guillotine on 21 January 1793. The same fate befell Marie Antoinette on 16 October 1793. Found in the collection of the State A Pushkin Museum of Fine Arts, Moscow.
