Altarpiece detail, church of the Monastery of San Juan de los Reyes, Toledo, Spain, 2007. Artist: Samuel Magal
Altarpiece detail, church of the Monastery of St John of the Kings (San Juan de los Reyes), Toledo, Spain, 2007. This Franciscan monastery was founded by Ferdinand and Isabella of Spain to commemorate their victory over Afonso V of Portugal at the Battle of Toro in 1476. The architect was Juan Guas and construction was completed in 1504. The monastery was badly damaged when the French occupied Toledo during the Peninsular War, and was abandoned in 1835. Restoration work was begun in the 1880s and the monastery was restored to the Franciscan order in 1954. The altarpiece dates from the 16th century and is by Felipe Bigarny and Francisco de Comontes.
