San Lazaro Aqueduct, Rabo de Buey, Merida, Spain, 2007. The aqueduct of San Lazaro was constructed at the end of the 1st century AD to bring fresh water from an artificial lake northeast of Merida. Merida was founded by the Romans in 25 BC, under the name of Augusta Emerita, as a colony for veterans of the Vth and Xth Legions.
