Musician from the North Tympanum in the narthex of Vezelay Abbey church, Vezelay, Yonne, Burgundy, France. Vezelay Abbey was a Benedictine and Cluniac monastery founded in the 9th century by St Badilo, who was said to have brought back relics of Mary Magdalene from the Holy Land. The Abbey Church or Basilica of St Mary Magdalene is a 12th century Burgundian Romanesque church. The typanum over the north (left) door in the narthex is heavily carved with pilgrims to Emmaus, including this figure playing a musical instrument, probably a lute. It dates from c. 1115.
