The meeting of the cranks, 'The meeting of the cranks'. Charles J Guiteau (1841-1882), the assassinof the US President James Garfield. The assassination resulted in one of the most celebrated American insanity trials of the nineteenth century. A plea of insanity was rejected, and Guiteau was hanged on June 30, 1882.
