Fine Begum Hastings a Lack a Peck
Fine Begum Hastings a Lack a Peck, The Lord Chancellor, Edward Thurlow, pulls a horse-drawn cart bearing Warren Hastings and Edmund Burke, each asserting their moral ascendancy and holding peapods in the air. The depiction of peapods is a pun both on Hastings' name, which was also a popular type of green pea, and the Indian currency, the rupee, implying that his impeachment was due to financial impropriety. Thurlow's exclamation may also be a pun on 'lack' and 'lakh', the Indian term for a hundred thousand. Published : 1787 - 1788.
