Cheyt-Syngs' Ghost
Cheyt-Syngs' Ghost, This hand-coloured engraving depicts a woman, possibly Queen Charlotte, reading a book inscribed 'The State of India'. She sits in front of a cupboard stacked with bags of money. Warren Hastings, on the right, stands transfixed in horror at the apparition of Chait Singh, the Raja of Benares, who had rebelled against Hastings' land taxes. The artist, who depicts Chait Singh wearing a noose, appears to have confused him with Nanda Kumar, another key figure in Hastings' impeachment, who had been hanged for forgery in 1775.
