The exiles leave Ayodhya
The exiles leave Ayodhya, Rama, his wife and brother ride off in a chariot driven by Sumantra and surrounded by the grieving townspeople, whose tears lay the dust raised by the chariot's progress. Dasaratha hurries from his palace and goes through the gate of the city surrounded by his queens, their agony expressed in their outstretched arms begging them to stop for a while. Dasaratha and Kausalya run after the chariot crying for it to stop, until Rama, unable to bear the sight and sound, tells Sumantra to pretend he did not hear and to quicken his pace, so that they would be left behind.
