Rama, Sita and Laksmana put on bark clothes
Rama, Sita and Laksmana put on bark clothes, Dasaratha urges Sumantra to send the army and the principal citizens of Ayodhya with Rama to stay with him during his exile, but Kaikeyi objects that Bharata could not accept a kingdom so deprived of its chief components. Dasaratha says that he too will go into exile with Rama, so that Bharata and Kaikeyi can enjoy the kingdom together, but Rama refuses to accept any of this. All he will take with him will be garments of bark as befits a mendicant. Rama and Laksmana put on the clothes of bark over their dhotis, while Sita tries in vain to put them on herself. Seeing her inability, Kaikeyi herself here (the text says it should be Rama) puts a bark dress on Sita over her costume to the anger and consternation of all.
