Conisbrough Castle, South Yorkshire, c2013. General view. Built of magnesian limestone, it is the only example of its kind in Europe and was one of the inspirations for Sir Walter Scott's classic novel, Ivanhoe. The castle was initially built in the 11th century by William de Warenne, the Earl of Surrey, after the Norman conquest of England in 1066.
