Palace of Westminster, London, c2000s. Aerial view. Although a Royal Palace has stood on this site since about 1040 AD, most of the present Palace of Westminster, to give the Houses of Parliament its official name, was built 1839-1854. Westminster Bridge was the second masonry bridge over the Thames in London. It was originally built in 1750, and damaging the structure carried the death sentence. The present bridge was built in 1854-1862.
