Pendennis Castle, Falmouth, Cornwall, 2004. View of the keep from the south. Pendennis Castle was begun in 1540 as part of Henry VIII's defence of the south coast. The original castle consisted of the keep, seen here, which provided a series of gun platforms to protect Falmouth harbour and lodging for the governor. A large enclosing fortress was added in Elizabeth I's reign.
