Detail of the north tower of Stokesay Castle, Shropshire, 2005. Stokesay Castle is the finest and best-preserved 13th century fortified manor house in England. It was fortified by Lawrence de Ludlow, a wool merchant, who died in 1294. In recent centuries the house was occupied by tenants and so avoided significant alteration.
