'Shanghai. View of Bund', c1918. The Bund is a waterfront area in central Shanghai. The area traditionally housed international settlements, banks, trading houses and the British and Russian consulates. On the right is the Iltis monument which commemorated the 77 dead German naval personnel, whose ship, the gunboat SMS Iltis, had foundered off the Shandong coast in July 1896. It was demolished by an anti German mob in December 1918. [Kuhn & Komor, Shanghai, c1918]
