'Yokohama Earthquake', 1923. Yokohama, City of Yokohama, Japan. Yokohama was destroyed on September 1st 1923 by the Great Kanto earthquake. Rubble from the earthquake was used to reclaim land for parks, including the Yamashita Park, which opened in 1930. Yokohama was rebuilt, but an estimated thirty U.S. air raids during World War Two, the largest of which was on the  29th May 1945, demolished the city.
