Old Sarum, 1140, (c1990-2010). Reconstruction drawing of the castle gatehouse entrance to the inner bailey at Old Sarum, the earliest settlement of Salisbury in England. An Iron Age hillfort was erected around 400 BC. The Saxons took the British fort in the 6th century. The Normans constructed a motte and bailey castle in 11th century. ln the early 13th century, the buildings of Old Sarum were dismantled for stone and the old town dwindled.
