Lazar Kaganovich, Russian Communist politician, 1919. Artist: Pyotr Otsup
Lazar Kaganovich, Russian Communist politician, 1919. Kaganovich (1893-1991) was Chairman of the Nizhny Novgorod Province Committee of the Russian Communist Party at the time of the photograph. He was a close associate of Stalin, and in 1924 became a member of the Central Committee of the Communist Party. He was a member of the Politburo from 1930 until 1957. Kaganovich was responsible for overseeing the implementation of many of Stalin's economic policies and has been blamed for the disastrous famines that killed millions across the Soviet Union in 1932-1933 after the collectivisation of agriculture. He remained a committed Stalinist after Stalin's death and was dismissed from the Politburo in 1957 after he was involved in an attempted coup against Nikita Khruschev's leadership. In 1961 he was expelled from the Communist Party and ended his days as a pensioner in Moscow. Found in the collection of the Russian State Film and Photo Archive, Krasnogorsk.
