Gargoyle on tower, York Minster, 1958. The largest gothic cathedral in northern Europe and seat of the Archbishop of York. Walter de Gray, archbishop in 1215 ordered construction of the Gothic structure. On 9 July 1984, a fire believed to have been caused by a lightning destroyed the roof in the south transept, and around £2.5 million was spent on repairs.
