Alexander Siloti, Russian pianist and conductor, and Peter Tchaikovsky, Russian composer, 1888.
Alexander Siloti, Russian pianist and conductor, and Peter Tchaikovsky, Russian composer, 1888. Tchaikovsky (1840-1893) wrote music across a broad range of genres. Amongst his best known and most popular works are the ballets 'Swan Lake', 'The Sleeping Beauty' and 'The Nutcracker', the '1812 Overture', his First Piano Concerto, his last three numbered symphonies, and the opera 'Eugene Onegin'. Siloti (1863-1945) was the first cousin of Sergei Rachmaninoff. He studied piano under Tchaikovsky at the Moscow Conservatory, graduating with the Gold Medal in 1881. He later worked as editor for Tchaikovsky. Prior to the 1917 Revolution he was one of Russia's foremost artists, but in 1918 fled the country, eventually settling in New York. Between 1925 and 1942 Siloti taught at the Juilliard Graduate School. Found in the collection of the State Tretiakov Gallery, Moscow.
