The James A Garfield Monument, sculpted by John Quincy Adams Ward in memory of President James A Garfield (1831-1881), who was shot and severely wounded at the beginning of July 1881 by a man named Charles Guiteau who was a supporter of the Republican party. Guiteau was eventually executed, but the President lingered for more than two months before eventually dying from his wounds on 19 September 1881.
