Randolph Street, Chicago, Illinois, USA, c1900. Colonnaded exterior of the combined City Hall/County building designed by James Egan. Construction started in 1875, and after many delays, was completed in 1885, but the building was beset with problems. In 1905, the foundations sank six inches, causing a gas pipe to rupture and resulting in an explosion that blew the roof off the building. From Scenic Marvels of the New World edited by Prof. Geo.R. Cromwell. [C.N.Greig & Co., c1900]
