Pevensey Castle, Sussex, 1894. Medieval castle and former Roman Saxon Shore fort. A castle was first built at Pevensey early in the 4th century by the Romans, but it was destroyed by Saxon invaders in the late 5th century. Left derelict for some 600 years, the castle was then rebuilt by Harold Godwinson, Earl of Wessex (later King Harold of England). The Normans made some additions to the castle after 1066 but by Elizabethan times it had fallen into disrepair. From Beautiful Britain; views of our stately homes.
