'Alexander Nowell', (1819). Portrait of English clergyman and theologian Alexander Nowell (c1507-1602). Nowell was Dean of St Paul's Cathedral during much of the reign of Elizabeth I. He developed puritan views during a stay in Germany in the 1550s, but largely kept them to himself and conformed with the official Church of England position on theological issues.
