Semyon Budyonny, Russian Red Army soldier, 1922. Artist: Pyotr Otsup
Semyon Budyonny, Russian Red Army soldier, 1922. Budyonny (1883-1973) commanded the First Cavalry Army, which played a prominent part in securing the Red Army's victory in the Russian Civil War. A close ally of Stalin, he was made a Marshal of the Soviet Union in 1935 and survived the drastic purges of the military of the 1930s. He was one of the senior commanders of the Red Army when the Nazis invaded the Soviet Union in 1941 and presided over some of the worst defeats suffered by the Russians. Stalin relieved Budyonny of command but allowed him to retire as a Hero of the Soviet Union after the end of the war. Found in the collection of the Russian State Film and Photo Archive, Krasnogorsk.
