Vyacheslav Molotov, Russian Communist politician, 1930. Artist: Pyotr Otsup
Vyacheslav Molotov, Russian Communist politician, 1930. Pictured while serving as Chairman of the Council of People's Commissars. Molotov (1890-1986) rose to power within the Soviet Communist Party in the 1920s as a protege of Stalin. He was heavily involved in the Great Terror, the purges of the late 1930s and negotiated the non-agression pact (Molotov-Ribbentrop Pact) between the Soviet Union and Nazi Germany in 1939. Molotov was Soviet Foreign Minister from 1939-1949 and again from 1953-1956 after Stalin's death. In June 1957 he was expelled from the Politburo after being involved in a failed challenge to the leadership on Nikita Khrushchev. In 1961 Molotov was expelled from the Communist Party, but was readmitted in 1984. Throughout his long life he remained abolutely unrepentant about his role in the events of Stalin's rule. Found in the collection of the Russian State Film and Photo Archive, Krasnogorsk.
