First Cavalry Army tachanka, Russian Civil War, 1919.
First Cavalry Army tachanka, Russian Civil War, 1919. A tachanka was a horse-drawn machine-gun platform, usually mounted on a cart or open wagon. They were used extensively during the Russian Civil War, particularly on the open steppes of southern Russia and Ukraine, where the ability to fight a war of high mobility was paramount. The First Cavalry Army was the most famous Red Army cavalry unit during the Civil War. It was commanded by a Cossack, Semyon Budyonny, with Kliment Voroshilov as its political commissar. Found in the collection of the Russian State Film and Photo Archive, Krasnogorsk.
