Red Army Chief of Staff Mikhail Frunze on Khodynsky Field, Moscow, Soviet Union, 1924. Artist: Pyotr Otsup
Red Army Chief of Staff Mikhail Frunze on Khodynsky Field, Moscow, Soviet Union, 1924. Taking the salute. Frunze (1885-1925) was amongst the leading figures in both the 1905 and 1917 Russian Revolutions. He was imprisoned for ten years after leading striking textile workers in the 1905 Revolution, before escaping. In 1917 he led a force of armed workers in the struggle for control of Moscow. During the Civil War he defeated the White Army of Admiral Kolchak in Siberia and was given command of the entire Eastern Front. In 1921 Frunze was elected to the Central Committee of the Communist Party and in 1925 was appointed Chairman of the Revolutionary Military Council. He died in 1925 from an overdose of chloroform during an operation to deal with ulcers. It has been suggested that Stalin, with whom Frunze had clashed and who had persuaded him to have the operation, might have ordered the overdose to be given. Found in the collection of the Russian State Film and Photo Archive, Krasnogorsk.
