Prisoners at Catenoy, Oise, northern France, c1914-c1918. A troop of French light cavalry, known as Chasseurs-au-Cheval, with sabres drawn, guard a column of German prisoners-of-war captured during the Somme offensive, as they march along a country road. The Germans have been stripped of almost all their field equipment, and are left with the basics; most wear the Jack Boots Model 1866, in addition they are wearing the feldmutze, (peak-less field cap), and field-grey tunics and trousers. The soldier at the centre is wearing the newly issued Stahlhelm Model 1916 (steel helmet) which marks him as as Sturmtruppen, (Storm-Trooper), and one of the POWs appears to be wearing a French issue Calotte, (forage-cap). Photograph from a series of glass plate stereoview images depicting scenes from World War I (1914-1918).
