'The Duke of Buckingham assassinated by Felton at Portsmouth August 23rd 1628.', (1792). English politician and courtier George Villiers, 1st Duke of Buckingham (1592-1628), was adviser to James I and then Charles I. He was murdered by John Felton, a disgruntled Puritan naval officer, who was a member of one of Buckingham's unsuccessful expeditions. Although Felton was a hero in the public's eyes for having killed the hated royal favourite, he was condemned to death and hanged at Tyburn on 29 November 1628. From Ashburton's History of England.
