Standing and Reclining Buddha, 12th century, Gal-Vihara, Polonnaruwa, Sri Lanka. (20th century). Cut from rock-face, during the regn of King Parakramabahuin in the 12th century, Gal Vihara was a rock temple and Buddhist shrine in the ancient city of Polonnaruwa in North Central Province, Sri Lanka. The central feature of the temple is four rock relief statues of the Buddha, carved into the face of a large granite rock.
