Yakov Sverdlov, Soviet politician, in his office, c1917-c1919. Artist: Pyotr Otsup
Yakov Sverdlov, Soviet politician, in his office, c1917-c1919. Sverdlov (1885-1919) returned to Russia from exile after the February Revolution of 1917 and was elected to the Central Committee of the Communist Party. A close ally of Lenin, he played an important role in the planning of the October Revolution that overthrew the provisional government and brought the Bolsheviks to power. After the Revolution Sverdlov was Chairman of the All-Russian Central Executive Committee. He was the leading architect of the Red Terror imposed on Russia in 1918 and was responsible for ordering the execution of the captive Tsar Nicholas II and his family at Yekaterinburg. In 1924 that city was renamed Sverdlovsk in his honour. Sverdlov had died five years previously. The official version of events stated that he had died during the great influenza pandemic but it has been suggested that he died after being attacked and struck on the head with a heavy object by a worker during a visit to a Moscow factory. Found in the collection of the Russian State Film and Photo Archive, Krasnogorsk.
