Sydir Kovpak, Ukrainian partisan leader during Great Patriotic War, c1941-c1945. Kovpak (1887-1967) served in the Imperial Russian army in the First World War, twice being decorated for bravery. After the Russian Revolution he joined the Red Army partisans fighting against the Germans in the latter stages of the conflict and then fought against General Denikin's White army in the Russian Civil War. After the Nazis invaded the Soviet Union in 1941, Kovpak commanded a partisan force that fought the German occupiers and their allies, the Ukrainian Insurgent Army, deep behind their lines across the Ukraine and Belarus and as far as the Romanian frontier. He was twice awarded the title of Hero of the Soviet Union and ended the war with the rank of Major-General. Found in the collection of the Russian State Film and Photo Archive, Krasnogorsk.
