1st Cavalry Army taking the city of Rostov by force, Russian Civil War, 1920. As the most heavily industrialised city in southern Russia, Rostov was an important strategic objective for both the Red and White armies during the Russian Civil War. The 1st Cavalry Army was the most famous Red Army cavalry unit during the conflict. It was commanded by a Cossack, Semyon Budyonny, with Kliment Voroshilov as its political commissar. Found in the collection of the Russian State Film and Photo Archive, Krasnogorsk.
