Caerphilly Castle, Wales, 1894. Mainly built between 1268 and 1271, Caerphilly Castle is the largest castle in Wales and the second biggest in Britain, after Windsor. It was built by Gilbert de Clare as a stronghold during his dispute with Llewellyn ap Gruffydd, Prince of Gwynedd. The castle was captured by the forces of Owain Glyndwr on two occasions during his revolt against the English, in 1403 and 1405. From Beautiful Britain; views of our stately homes.
