Alexander Herzen, Russian writer and thinker, 1861. Herzen (1812-1870) is regarded as the father of Russian socialism. His philosophy and writings were important in bringing about the emancipation of Russia's serfs in 1861. He was a cousin of the photographer Sergei Lvovich Levitsky, who took this photograph of Herzen. Found in the collection of the State Museum of History, Moscow.
