Richard I, Coeur de Lion landing at Sandwich in Kent, 14 March 1194, (c1880). Richard the Lionheart (1157-1199), was the eldest son of Henry II and Eleanor of Aquitaine, and second Angevin (Plantagenet) king of England, (1189-1199). On his way home from the Third Crusade (1189-1192) he was shipwrecked and began to make his way across Europe in disguise. He was recognised and held to ransom by Emperor Henry VI. England paid the ransom and Richard was released.
