Philip Sidney, 16th century English soldier, statesman, poet, and patron of poets, c1840. Sidney (1554-1586) was appointed Governor of Flushing in the Netherlands in 1585. On 22 September 1586 he was wounded in the thigh at the Battle of Zutphen in which the Dutch and English defeated the Spanish, and died at Arnhem 26 days later.
