King Ludwig II of Bavaria, 1867. Ludwig II (1845-1886) ruled Bavaria from 1864 until 1886. He built the castle of Neuschwanstein in Bavaria and was a patron and devotee of composer Richard Wagner. Known as Mad King Ludwig, he was officially declared insane by the government and deposed. He died in mysterious circumstances shortly afterwards. From a private collection.
