'The American Gladiators - Habet!', 1865. Artist: John Tenniel
'The American Gladiators - Habet!', 1865. The gladiator representing the Northern States is finally overpowering his opponent, the Southern States. April 1865 saw the beginning of the end of the Civil War in America with the fall of Richmond. The siege of this town had lasted nearly 1500 days. The new commander of the Confederate forces, General Lee, was defeated by Sheridan and the Confederates were forced to evacuate Richmond, leaving it for Grant's forces to occupy. After Lee was defeated at Sailor's Creek just a few days later, he surrendered to Grant. The war was all but over. From Punch, or the London Charivari, April 29, 1865.
