Highgate Cemetery, London, 1838.
Highgate Cemetery, London, 1838. View of the Egyptian Avenue in the North London Cemetery, built in the architectural style fashionable at this time. By the early 19th century, inner London burial sites were full and could no longer accept new burials. Parliament voted for seven new private cemeteries to be created around inner London. Highgate opened in 1839 (West Cemetery) and expanded in 1852 (East Cemetery). It is now cared for by a charity, The Friends of Highgate Cemetery. From The Saturday Magazine. (London, 1838).
