'The Vatican Hatter', 1874. Artist: Joseph Swain
'The Vatican Hatter', 1874 - who looks very like Pope Pius IX - shows the new Archbishop of Westminster a cardinal's hat and apologises that he hasn't got one to fit Dr Manning. Henry Edward Manning had in fact been one of the leaders of the Oxford Movement, but converted to Roman Catholicism in 1851. He did become a Cardinal in 1875. From Punch, or the London Charivari, January 10, 1874.
