Au Revoir, 1873. Artist: Joseph Swain
Au Revoir, 1873. Germany, carrying a bag stuffed with cash, says farewell to France. A defiant France insists it is not farewell, just au revoir. Following France's disastrous war against Prussia, the newly unified Germany settled on the terms of a huge war indemnity being paid by France. The money was in fact raised very quickly and, in September 1873, a year and a half before the deadline agreed, the final German troops left France. From Punch, or the London Charivari, September 27, 1873.
