'Probably The Next Absurdity', 1868.
'Probably The Next Absurdity', 1868. In this cartoon, Punch manages to hit two of its favourite targets with the one stone, both relating to women. The journal regularly poked fun at the world of women's fashion, as well as at any attempt by women either to participate in male sporting activities, or to gain employment in any field seen previously as specifically within the male domain. Here, the absurdity, according to Punch, of female fashions is combined with the far-fetched notion that a woman might, one day, enter the legal profession. From Punch, or the London Charivari, January 18, 1868.
