'A Crisis!', 1868. Artist: John Tenniel
'A Crisis!', 1868. At the end of April 1868, Gladstone won his Resolution for the disestablishment of the Irish Church. Disraeli's government lost by 65 votes. With Prime Minister Disraeli on the left, and Gladstone on the right, this cartoon depicts the two party leaders meeting face to face, each man carrying his own particular burden. Neither man is prepared to give way to the other. From Punch, or the London Charivari, May 16, 1868.
