'Paralysing Piece of News For Mr B', 1866. Artist: George du Maurier
'Paralysing Piece of News For Mr B', 1866. A henpecked husband looks innocent as his nagging wife reads out a shocking letter from The Times in which it states, that when in church the banns of marriage have been put up after the Second Lesson, the marrage is an illegal one. Mrs B states Why, that's how We were married! It might be unfair to suggest that he had sent the letter in himself. However, note the way the stance of the ageing wife mirrors that of the much younger version in the picture behind her, in a way designed to draw the most unflattering comparison. From Punch, or the London Charivari, July 7, 1866.
