'Alfred Refuses to Burn His Fingers', 1862.
'Alfred Refuses to Burn His Fingers', 1862. The Greek Government had decided that elections should be held to find a King to replace King Otho, who had abdicated. One suggestion was that Prince Alfred, Victoria's second son, should be invited to take the throne. This invitation was politely decline. This cartoon, therefore, depicts Greece inviting a suitably clad Prince Alfred to take possession of the cake labelled 'Greece'. The cake being very hot, however, Alfred is most reluctant to 'burn his fingers'. From Punch, or the London Charivari, December 6, 1862.
