Battle of Modder River, 2nd Boer War, 28 November 1899. Men of the 1st Argyll and Sutherland Highlanders, equipped with the Lee Metford 10-round magazine rifle, crossing the drift with bayonets fixed. The British were under the command of General Methuen, the the Boers under Generals Cronje and de la Rey. Although the Boer losses were much lighter than those of the British, they were forced to withdraw from their positions.
