Captain John Augustus Wood, Bushire, Persia, 1856. John Wood was a Scottish recipient of the Victoria Cross, and captain in the 20th Bombay Native Infantry, Indian Army, during the Anglo-Persian War of 1856-1857. Captain Wood led a Grenadier Company which led the assault on the fort of Bushire. He was hit by seven musket balls at close range but continued to lead the attack, which was successful. Wood survived and later rose to the rank of colonel.
